Description

The aim of this course is to apply the theoretical principles describing the motion of rigid and deformable bodies, as covered earlier in the course, to the design of mechanical systems. The term ‘mechanical system’ refers here to any object or material system, whether deformable or not, which one wishes to characterise and design to fulfil a specific function. This design process involves analysing the system’s mechanical equilibrium states, or the desired motion and the forces involved. This design approach is illustrated in this course by two examples: (i) the vibrational analysis of slender bodies, (ii) the quasi-static analysis of structural mechanics problems, potentially involving optimisation methods and numerical solutions, for the design of systems.

Learning Outcomes AAv (AAv)

  • AAv1 [heures: 20, B3, B4] : By the end of the semester, S6 students will be able to carry out a detailed design of a beam in a dynamic vibration framework.

  • AAv2 [heures: 20,B1,B2,B3,B4,C1,C4] : By the end of the semester, the S6 student will be able to design mechanical systems involving deformable objects, with the aim of addressing problems encountered by structural engineers. The approaches adopted include the use of advanced numerical tools and enable the optimisation of the behaviour of these objects by adjusting various parameters such as their geometry or physical properties.

Assessment methods

Group work will be carried out on each sub-section, resulting in a graded report.
