UE D: Mechanical design

The unit aims to develop skills in mechanical design and manufacturing in strong coupling with digital CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and manufacturing) tools. At the end of this unit the student will be able to:

• master the vocabulary, understand and model the operation of an existing mechanical system based on its 2D and/or 3D representation
• design, in 2D and/or 3D, part of a partially given system comprising rotational guidance and power transmission by gear or synchronous belt.
• use CATIA CAD software to build and document the digital model of the system then manufacture the parts with digital rapid prototyping machines (laser cutting and 3D printers).
